What's in the Name?

Where did our name come from?

LUTHER - This name can have two origins, and it is now impossible to separate them.

The Old French word Luthier, denoted a Lute Player. Nicholas Luthier, a French politician, died in 1793.

The old French "luthier" was taken to England where it formed the surnames for Ralph Luther, who lived in Yorkshire in 1529, and for John Luther, who lived in County Suffold in 1674.

The German name Luther is derived from the Old High German word liut (folk people).  It appears to
have been first used in combination with other words to form the Old High German compounded names,
such as Leutger(people-spear).  Ludhari (people-war).  Leutfrid (people-peace) and so on. Leuther
                    and Lutheret are varying forms.

The most noted of the name is Martin Luther (1483-1546), the German religious reformer.

By the way, Tom's wife Lisa is studying to be a "Luthier", a person who makes, repairs, and restores
                    Violins.
